Yurok Tribe
TASK
Create a series of maps that highlight the issues caused by dams along the Klamath to both the Yurok Tribe and Salmon.
BACKGROUND
The Klamath River, the zone of interaction, flows 257 miles through California and Oregon crossing the Yurok Reservation, Six Rivers National Forest, and Klamath National Forest before reaching dams along the Upper Klamath River.
The river is extremely important to the tribe and tribal identity. According to the tribal elder, Glenn Moore, “ I can not think of any traditional Yurok story that does not refer to the river in some way.” (Cosens and Royster 2012, 100) Not only does Yurok daily life revolve around the river, but it is significant to the identity and language of the Yurok tribe.
